NeighborhoodNomad
the marathon continues........
I was watching last night's episode of The Daily Show and the guest was talking about a universal basic income and how the people will benefit from it. It's basically free money for everyone every month forever.
According to wikipedia:
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Basic_income
A basic income, also called basic income guarantee, universal basic income (UBI), basic living stipend (BLS) or universal demogrant, is a type of program in which citizens (or permanent residents) of a country may receive a regular sum of money from the government. A pure or unconditional basic income has no means test, much like Social Security in the United States. Basic income can be implemented nationally, regionally or locally.
An unconditional income that is sufficient to meet a person's basic needs (at or above the poverty line), is called full basic income, while if it is less than that amount, it is called partial.
Some welfare systems are related to basic income but have certain conditions. As these are not universal, they are more often referred to as guaranteed minimum income systems. For example, Bolsa Família in Brasil is restricted to poor families and the children are obligated to attend school.
A related welfare system is negative income tax, in which the government stipend is gradually reduced with higher labor income.
I think it's a good idea. I think most things should be free but that's another topic... But I think this a good idea and I think it should continue to be explored and practiced.
So what do you think? Can universal basic income change the quality of our lives for the better? Is universal basic income a good idea or is it just gonna make things worse? Or do you think nothing will change at all?
