Has Generation Z Produced Anybody Great At Anything?

Money doesn't equate to greatness.

I've been posting this quote since the IC, and it's still relevant today as ever:

"Just because you've sold millions of records doesn't mean you’re good. McDonald’s sells a lot of hamburgers.” - Ahmet Ertegun, founder of Atlantic Records.

The money don't mean shit, it just means they found an audience willing to watch their bullshit. The vast majority of these folks on TikTok will be forgotten in a few years as people get older and move on to the next mindless bit of "content" their algorithm sends their way.
Money is the only metric we can accurately measure success. Greatness is always going to be subjective.. You may not consider something that made money great
But if someone else considers it great, the least we can do is acknowledge that it's profitable even if we don't like it.

And it sounds like we don't like anything that's really our right now.

But that clearly places us in the minority of opinions if the shit is wildly popular and making a lotta money.

We gotta get out of this main character bias like we are the deciding and determining opinion on what's great.

We are not the authority here.... Even if we wanna be

It’s really simple. Like du said, the stage is different.

The internet changed everything. “Talent” has reached a saturation point. Everything is on 24/7 and there’s not enough time in the day to make everyone the focal point. “Talent” used to be funneled thru a machine & now anyone with a camera and a mic can potentially become famous.

No it isn't. Having money isn't the only measure of success, y'all only believe that because of your own short sightedness.

Paid In Full and Illmatic are widely regarded as two of the greatest albums in hip hop, yet it took Paid In Full 8 years to hit platinum while Illmatic took 7 years to sell a million. Greatness doesn't have a dollar sign on it 'cause if it did, those two albums would have gone diamond+. Again: Just 'cause you sell a lot, that doesn't mean you mad something good. Typically it means you made something easily consumed by the masses and that's it.

I doubt anyone considers much of what's on TikTok as "great", but it gets watched because that's that this generation grew up doing: watching shit on the internet; that's their TV. And because of the way it's designed, it sends you more of what you just looked at so, yeah, some shit gets blown up and those people that made it get paid. In recent years there's been videos and social media posts talking about "forgotten tiktokers", and the shit ain't even 10 years old yet.

There's a lot of people from Baby Boomers down to Millennials that regularly watch stuff on TikTok. My FB timeline gets hit with chicks I went to school with doing the various dances on there, so there's def people of all ages watching that type of content despite it "not being ours".

That doesn't mean you have talent.

That doesn't mean you have talent.

What I’m saying is that even if they do have talent, theres so much noise to get thru to see it.

When’s the last time you were truly impressed by “talent”?

We’ve reached a saturation point.

We’ve seen it before. We’ve heard it before.

Bruh just because you don’t like it don’t mean it’s bad. Our parent didn’t like what we like your parent probably never liked rap. Their parent probably never like Marvin Gaye. It is what it is.

Exactly we are too tuned in. We need to be watching the news and 60 minutes.

What part of just cuz you don't like it doesn't mean it's not successful you missed?

If it's making money it's successful.

Great is subjective.

"Widely considered" isn't an honest assessment....

Because the hip hop community was not representative of all music at the time. Rap wasn't really taken seriously by the music world simply because those albums weren't making millions of sales.... It wasn't until our generation overall became top consumers that hip hop started transitioning into mainstream.

When rap albums started making noise on billboard is when the impacts started being made. But you still had people holding on to the belief that it wasn't a real genre. And that's when they started sounding dated...

DMX is a prime example.... when he came out and our generation considered him great.... our argument was that he had 2 platinum albums in one year. Jay-Z even boycotted the Grammy's.

That's like if today someone like Kendrick boycotted the Grammy's cuz some cat we never heard of sold crazy albums on billboard... But we don't acknowledge it, cuz to us it sounds crazy...and we're just not in touch with what these kids like...

My overall point is my same point. Just cuz you don't like it, doesn't mean anything. If it's making money there's always going to be an argument that this is what the future is.. This is the direction we're heading. This is what the masses want, and if someone can excel during this period.... This is who they are going to call their greats.

You don't have to like it

But if they have the support of their generation, they going to have an argument.

Somewhere we lost the plot where expertise and experience for clout and attention
Like I said

They cut out the middle man and went straight to influence over the masses.

This is the era of instant gratification. How quickly can you produce has to overcome how well can you produce.

They are significantly shifting the rules of supply and demand

Ok but if there generation considers it great 20 years from now then what?

I didn't say that. I said just 'cause it sells a lot doesn't mean that it's any good. There's a difference.

I think, and this thread and social media in general, shows that people have a hard time realizing they've aged out of the target audience for most popular entertainment. What is considered great is subjective but alot struggle with "well i dont like it so it must not be good". Nah your opinion ain't the end all be all and if millions of people are enjoying it then clearly it's resonating in some way. People do consume and discard things faster now for sure but that don't mean great shit still won't get made.
