What part of just cuz you don't like it doesn't mean it's not successful you missed?
If it's making money it's successful.
Great is subjective.
"Widely considered" isn't an honest assessment....
Because the hip hop community was not representative of all music at the time. Rap wasn't really taken seriously by the music world simply because those albums weren't making millions of sales.... It wasn't until our generation overall became top consumers that hip hop started transitioning into mainstream.
When rap albums started making noise on billboard is when the impacts started being made. But you still had people holding on to the belief that it wasn't a real genre. And that's when they started sounding dated...
DMX is a prime example.... when he came out and our generation considered him great.... our argument was that he had 2 platinum albums in one year. Jay-Z even boycotted the Grammy's.
That's like if today someone like Kendrick boycotted the Grammy's cuz some cat we never heard of sold crazy albums on billboard... But we don't acknowledge it, cuz to us it sounds crazy...and we're just not in touch with what these kids like...
My overall point is my same point. Just cuz you don't like it, doesn't mean anything. If it's making money there's always going to be an argument that this is what the future is.. This is the direction we're heading. This is what the masses want, and if someone can excel during this period.... This is who they are going to call their greats.
You don't have to like it
But if they have the support of their generation, they going to have an argument.
I think, and this thread and social media in general, shows that people have a hard time realizing they've aged out of the target audience for most popular entertainment. What is considered great is subjective but alot struggle with "well i dont like it so it must not be good". Nah your opinion ain't the end all be all and if millions of people are enjoying it then clearly it's resonating in some way. People do consume and discard things faster now for sure but that don't mean great shit still won't get made.

Yea i never argued whether I think they're good or not.Success and greatness are not the same. You need to uncouple the two in your mind in order to understand what I'm saying.
The example I used, the quote from Ahmet Ertugun, is a perfect illustration: Does McDonalds make the greatest hamburger of all time or have they merely been successful at selling a poor to mediocre burger by making it cheap, easily accessible, and pushed it on the masses by marketing?
Now apply this to music, tv, movies, social media videos and the people that created it: Are they actually good or has it been made cheap, easily accessible, and pushed on the masses by algorithms?
Y'all keep talking this "if you don't like it" bullshit... I'm not even talking about whether or not I like it. I never once mentioned myself, you and @SeaSnake made that up to bolster your arguments.
Everybody think they're the main character. I was watching a video yesterday that PERFECTLY explained why there are so many female lead media..... And it's not to upset the male populous... But the argument is so difficult to have cuz men naturally hate on shit that's not specifically for themI think, and this thread and social media in general, shows that people have a hard time realizing they've aged out of the target audience for most popular entertainment. I'm not equating success with greatness.Success and greatness are not the same. You need to uncouple the two in your mind in order to understand what I'm saying.

And I directed it towards you because what are the metrics that determine greatnes?Success and greatness are not the same. You need to uncouple the two in your mind in order to understand what I'm saying.

Because tiktok is making niggas millionaires and influencing world culture at a higher rate than we've ever seen before. Talent is being poured into immediate exposure, and this is where the bulk of entertainment is going in the future....Yea i never argued whether I think they're good or not.
Im not a Kevin Hart fan, but I can acknowledge the fact that he's dominating stand up and movies. Im just asking where I the Generation Z version of it. Who is the gen z version of Drake? Etc
All these niggas keep saying is "... tiktok".
Bro niggaz is crashing out over iron heart at this exact momentBut that's a garbage argument 'cause when it's well done, the shit is fire and well appreciated by these same men you claim "hate on shit that's not specifically for them".
It’s because we think you are downplaying the greatness based on personal taste. Can you think something is great if you don’t follow it or listen to it? And good is subjective to you hat you like. If I don’t like somebody music of course I’m not going to think it was great.
If record sales don’t matter than what does? Define greatness. Because it seem like yall opinion is based on not liking what young people do.
It plenty folks who like Run DMC and didn’t like DMX and wouldn’t consider him great. I’m seeing that in here.
