Classic or Nah?

So who or what exactly was old heads to you then at the time of the album drop?

I probably could’ve worded that better I was joking but I’d say for ppl around 26 and under (at the time of release) this album hit different. Rather you liked Drake or not you couldn’t go anywhere without hearing a song off this album playing somewhere. I don’t even check for Drake’s music like I did back then so I could totally understand not rocking with this album depending on your age or music taste at the time.

That's the thing, Drake was 25 when that album dropped, most ppl on this site at that time were between 21 and 32, albeit this site wasn't here yet, so whether it was Ill Community or Boxden or 4chan (for the wolves in sheep's clothing) or etc... most making these comments on here, that was who the music was for. So it wouldn't be on some old-head hate or misunderstanding tip even though you're joking, but rather experiencing the music and getting the make up of it, seeing its stand against time

Good Point

I was in high school between 87-91. I remember NWA, KRS, Rakim, Kane, LL Cool J, Public Enemy, Native Tounges, etc.

I was in my 20s during most of the 90s (Big, Pac, WuTang, Boot Camp, Death Row, etc.)

I bought Take Care because everybody was talking about how hot Drake is, or was. Now I feel like an old fart, like my parents generation that doesn't understand the current generation. Seriously, I don't understand why anybody would listen to Take Care.

Sounds Like Those Parents You Don’t Wanna Become
If You Can’t Relate Just Say That & We’ll Understand
Not His Best Work But A Classic Nonetheless If You Was Outside During That Time

Classic rap albums should not feel like its aged terribly and can hold its own against other certified classics. Great singles, each song flows well into the next, and good continuity

That’s the thing this isn’t just a rap album so judging it from a pure hip hop stance is dumb imo. How could you compare this to a classic rap album? There was no rap album bigger than this album that year. And it came out in November. Everything else came and went this dominated the charts well into spring 2012.

Edit: How old are you? If you didn’t like the album when it dropped I don’t expect you to like it today. I can still listen to and appreciate majority of the songs today. Also, It’s 10 years later people still say YOLO and I never heard that saying before this album for whatever that’s worth.

Nope. That's where you're wrong.

I was in high school when Please Hammer Don't Hurt Em came out. It was my sophomore year going into my junior year. That album went diamond, 10X platinum.

I say that to say that record sales and popularity are irrelevant in the grand scheme of things.

I doubt Please Hammer Don't Hurt Em is considered one of the top 10 rap albums that year by anybody.

Record sales and popularity just means you had a catchy single, or a handful of catchy singles. But those songs on MC Hammer's album don't have any replay value.

I was 25 when this album came out...thought it was a good album but I never considered it a classic.

IMO Nothing Was The Same is Drake's best album and the closes he has to a timeless classic.

Drake has beaucoup timeless singles but not a complete body of work

Don’t Forget About Thank Me Later

Don’t Forget About Thank Me Later
Thank Me Later was a great debut...

still not a classic.

on a larger scale...

only rapper from his "class" that dropped a classic debut is Kendrick with GKMC

only rappers outta that class that have one or more certified CLASSICS are Kendrick and Cole

Kendrick is 3 for 3 ( GKMC, TPAB, DAMN)

Cole ( Forrest Hills Dr)

everybody else got excellent or near classic albums in their discography

Drake (Nothing Was The Same)
Big Sean (Dark Sky Paradise)
Wale (Ambition)
