Tris Dixon is one of the GOAT boxing reporters, writers, podcasters in the game and he loves 70s and 80s LHW fighters/era...

I cant recommend his book 'The Road To Nowhere' enough...

In the early 00s Tris had almost $0 to his name, he went the Catskills, flat broke to train with Kevin Rooney... From there he decided to go and try interview as many fighters basically from the 1930s-onwards before they died, so they wouldnt be forgotten... All this is pre internet/social media, so he often turned up/cold called at random houses, dementia homes, care homes, prisons etc and with next to no money, he often slept ruff on the streets or in hostels and that book covers this mad adventure... Such a great book, up there with GOAT boxing books imo its must read for any boxing fan...

Anyways during this period he ended up striking up friendships with some of the fighters and one of those was Matthew Saad Muhammad, who is obviously one of the GOAT LHWs and who he became super friendly with...

He ended up living with Matthew for a period and they stayed in touch until Matthew's death... Tris promised him he would write his story and he kept true to his word... So thats the next on my to read list...

Check out his podcast 'Boxing Life Stories' too, Ive never seen so many boxers and also people within the sport be so comfortable, open up and be so vulnerable with an interviewer...

Hes changed the format abit recently, it kinda stopped being 'Boxing Life Stories' from April onwards but if look back through the catalog from the very start in 2018- April 2025 theres so much gold to keep you busy...
