yeah I mean there was still good music in the middle of tall tees and 6 sweatbands

early 90's will probably always be considered goat musically....but niggas had jheri curls and did beer commercials

But them beer commercial >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> every ringtone rapper ever.

Remember when Nas was killin rappers for doing alcohol commercials and now he's the face of Hennessy lol

Nah, in the 80s Hip Hop was organic. Between like 85-87 there was no outlet for Hip Hop. The Source didn't exist, Yo! MTV Raps wasn't out. Hip Hop was pure because there was no corporate involvement.

The corporations stepped in circa 88

nah b, corporate rap started with St Ides and Sprite commercials in the early 90's. St Ides opened the door, they showed corporate America that there was money to be made in hip hop. Sprite followed suit with their commercials, next thing you know erruhbody gettin endorsement deals.

What happened is Hip Hop got older. When I was 19 we were drinking 40s and smoking blunts.

Now, in my mid 40s, we drink Hennessy and drink wine because we're more mature.

Also, a 40 doesn't get a middle aged man drunk like hard liquor.

In other words, when your tolerance goes up you stop drinking 40s.

I been saying where Nas is at now in business, he could've been at if he didn't have that dumb mentality.

Nigga would rhyme every alcoholic beverage in his songs and give them free promo, but won't take check from them??

That was around the time corporations were trying to court some of everything "urban" to broaden their consumer base. Remember when there was break dancing in commercials? Breaking, Breaking 2, and Rappin'? A bunch of movies had lil breakdancing and rapping moments just thrown in for no real reason back then too. Corporations always try to latch on to whatever they think is the hot shit kids are doing and exploit it, then move on but they were almost always at least a step and a half behind the times when they did it in those days. That sprite commercial is a perfect example of it 'cause by '86 Kurtis Blow was already washed up, but he had a big name earlier in the decade so they went with him instead of the current kings of hip hop (in '86 anyways) Run DMC. We didn't really get another hip hop Sprite commercial until... what... 95?

We did get break dancing and rapping Fred and Barney for them Cocoa/Fruity Pebbles commercials and I'm almost positive the Trix rabbit did something similar. But that shit came and went quickly because by '87 BMX and skateboarding was the next hot thing and corporations had moved on. It was only after St Ides cleaned house and showed 'em how to do it the right way that they circled back to hip hop.

So the music was better cuz you couldn't watch a rap video or read a rap magazine?

Ehh..he was really just in his feelings and sneak dissing jay for doing them Heiniken commercials, as well as Belvedere. Dip set who he was also beefing w at the time had that nasty ass purple drink out too

That's what they say..but big and Pac weren't dropping classics during that time. Illmatic, 36 chambers...theres just so many classic albums between 92-96

That's something I noticed too, what year did they start callin the late 80s the golden era? 93? They started callin it the golden era way too prematurely.

Always thought the Golden Era was from about 87/88 to 96/97.

Seeing as most of the great/classic hip hop albums came out during those years.

I agree, that's what it should be, but if you ask the old heads or hip hop purists, they would say it was 86-91 or so.
