The praise Copeland gets has always bugged me. I don't fault her for being great at her craft, but what's being celebrated is weird. It's not like she's the first great black ballerina. It's just that ballet is a European artform and white people have done a lot of gate keeping. She's just the first black person they allowed to be part of their club. That's not really anything worth celebrating. Especially, since there are dance forms that African Americans either created or heavily contributed to.

It's not a take on her accomplishments at all. It's a take on what people choose to celebrate. If you think she's a great ballerina and deserves to be praised, that's fine. If you only know or care about her because an organization that's held strong on its racist gatekeeping finally decided to let a black person in.

Dos posted Alvin Ailey earlier. If she was just as good as she is now, would any of you even know her if she became the top dancer at Ailey instead of joining the other organization?
