OUT NOW Nas & DJ Premier - Light-Years

Added to Calendar: 12-12-25

The way everybody been hyping Nas up based of his features on all the Legends albums, I'm not surprised people are disappointed by this album. I haven't heard it yet, but I know expectations for what Nas would drop had to be astronomical.

ayo....I swear one of my first thoughts when I heard the album was "I wonder if Parks and Joe are going to keep it a buck w/ the album review"....lol
Niggas be coppin pleas or keeping commentary brief when it's somebody they have a relationship with and the album quality is...questionable. I'll definitely be watching that interview though.

Keep in mind ole Ian here, is Joe,Parks AND Preemo’s manager

And also Parks has been engineering Preemo production in the last few years,I believe

Basically, don’t hold you breath expecting any objective and honest feedback on this album from that camp

Idk why yall assume they wouldn’t like it?

Yep. I fully expect this to be a fluff piece given their relationships. I honestly want to hear Ice’s opinion on this one….(I know…..who says that….lol). He and Ish are more likely to be objective.

I wasnt hyped for this joint, its cool... Git Ready standing out... My Story Your Story, Junkie, Nasty Esco Nasir are solid too ....Nothing is wack tho....Avg besides those standouts.... Think cats expectations were through the roof...I wouldve been cool with another Hitboy produced album or one with multiple producers on it....

Fair point. Maybe a better way of saying it is….Parks is definitely going to ride with it because that’s 100% his bag even if he had no ties to the project or people. Joe can be a wildcard some times, but I wouldn’t expect him to openly voice anything critical about the album if he didn’t like it given his relationship with them too. I’ve seen Joe dance around some bad reviews in the past when it comes to artists he fucks with. In those instances he does that “if you don’t have anything good to say….” approach…lol. There’s also the chance he legitimately likes it though. I get it. It’ll be interesting to see his response amidst the general feedback I’ve been seeing so far.

EDIT:
Joe got the interview so I’ve got a pretty good idea how this will play out.

Anyone really disappointed must've not heard DJ Premier's work for like the last 10 years lol. The days of Paula Perry - Extra Extra and REKS - 25th Hour are long past. This is who he is now. Still GOAT in small doses but over a whole album the quality drops and he's giving you these beats that are TOO simple, like to the point where they sound unfinished. Minimalism is cool but Preemo be puttin out unseasoned chicken beats that push that aesthetic to the limit.

He needs a co-producer BAD but OG got too much pride. Even Prhyme was as good as it was because Adrian Younge gave him a bunch of amazing tracks to flip for free.......Adrian Younge was basically an uncredited co-producer.

I actually dig the sound design on My Life Is Real but its a textbook example of what I mean about unfinished beats. Somebody like Alchemist would have added a breakdown and a whole bunch of sound effects and little snippets of people talking in the background to add variation and tie it all together.

Calling that song NY State of Mind Pt. 3 is damn near unforgivable. Like first of all.......there was already a part 3 with Alicia Keys and Rakim. It was much better than this. Second of all....we really chipmunk sampling the Billy Joel song like Dipset didnt do that already? Unoriginal shit lol.

And was it really worth cutting a check to Steve Miller for those simple-ass chops?

That said,

I like this album wayyyyyyy more than I thought I would. This is much better production than what I heard on the Ransom and Marci albums.

Those dirty lofi breaks on GiT Ready and Pause Tapes are dope as fuck. Bouquet with those strings is utterly gorgeous. Madman, Writers, Nasty Esco Nasir sound like vintage Preemo to me. I love the smooth vibes on Sons - unPreemo-like in a good way. My Story Your Story is a talker type beat for Nas and AZ to reunite on.

And worst of the Legends series? Stop. Nigga I am still furious that Tony had the nerve to name that mids album SUPREME CLIENTELE 2. Greatest rap album of all time imho and you gonna make any sequel to it let alone some 7/10 shit.......i was offended. I didnt listen to any song from Rae album more than twice except the Ghostface & Nas duets. Big L album ruined the 7 Minute Freestyle by layering the shittiest drums I've ever heard on top of it; I'll stick with my old bootleg mp3 thank you. They really put a recording of Joe Budden talking about Big L on the album instead of any Children of the Corn. Okay. And we were all being polite about the Slick Rick album out of respect.

Havoc and De La Soul were the only ones who REALLY delivered but I'm willing to put this 3rd

Should’ve did an album with Pete Rock instead?

That 2019 album with Skyzoo is one of the best produced hip-hop albums I've ever heard and the last album with Common wasn't too far behind. So......... yeah. DJ Premier vs Pete Rock right now is like Aaron Rodgers in his 40s vs BRADY in his 40s lmao

The second listen was better than the first, but the production still holds this album back from being great… (to me)…

Props to everyone who like the album tho!

Not gonna lie, every time I go back and listen, I like the album more… Nas’ rapping his ass off on this joint! But the beats ain’t keeping up with Nas…

I only listened once and the beats sounded like what I expected . Simple stripped down boom bap hip hop.

But because I only listened to it once on the wake up, what stuck out to me was damn this nigga is rapping his ass off

I definitely care more about raps than beats though.

That’s because you’re an MC!
lol like snoop on Doggfather album “ Delicate? so that’s what makes me now ? I don’t give a fuck about no beat”

But maybe that’s why I’m not rich and famous also lol

I understand the importance of production, but it’s like damn all I need is some drums and a couple of sounds and I’m good. Anything else is a plus or overproduced
