The Downfall of Mainstream Rap

There’s just really a lot of low quality, uninspiring, mediocre talent, copy/paste, wack shit out and mfs keep supporting it. All that “it bangs in the club” or “bangs in my car” shit don’t cut it…especially in this day and age where music is more disposable than ever.

We've hit a point where old shit bangin' out the ride will get more heads nodding, more smiles, and an overall positive reaction than this new shit. Shit that ain't even that old gets a better reaction than new shit.

I say in the mid to late 2000's. Most shit that gets pushed into the mainstream now is straight trash.
That song anxiety by Doceii is mainstream but the streaming numbers are so low but the radio play was like top 10 a few weeks ago.

Certain music is being pushed by not really played

Shit went viral which pushed it into the top 10 billboard 100 but it’s not even a rap song

It was top 10 due to radio play but the streaming numbers wasn’t even in the top 50 or some shit like

I feel that track fall under hip hop

So thus far in mid 2025 the only tractions are some shit Kendrick and Drake released in 2024
Playboy Carti and Doechi

Poverty era

how is top 10 even calculated these days?

Cuz I dont know too many people that actually listen to the radio anymore.

More streaming and posting shit in their stories/reels/whateverthefucks

I know streams and radio is calculated into it among a few other factors.

Radio plays a huge part in the numbers/ranking

Drake Nokia was number one all platforms but couldn’t get any radio play so he took him a while to hit #1 even though his framing numbers for that track was so far ahead.

Nokia never hit no 1

I have no idea what’s actually playing on the radio. I have not listened to the radio in 10+ years. Sometimes my barber plays what’s on the radio, but it’s basically the news or call ins from Power 105 or Hot 97.
Yeah '99 was the last year I listened to the radio on a regular basis.

I swear before the Kendrick/Drake shit, there were several articles mentioning a falloff. I want to say NLU was one of the first hiphop songs to go to #1 last year.

seems like the folks that usually dominated the top of the charts stopped dropping music like that unless im mistaken.

yall think Clipse gonna get a number 1? 👀 lol

I made a thread about this a couple years ago in relation to music, but i think it may be the case across the board.

Has Generation Z (Currently ages 13-28) produced anybody great at anything? Rapper, singer, boxer, actor, director, anything?

Serious question.

As far as rap goes, I say No. My son-in-law is Gen-Z and we’ve had that exact debate several times. He’s a musician and he agrees with me for the most part. If I’m being honest he’s probably more critical of current music than I am, but he also has a deep love and appreciation for the art as I do.

You’re right. It never hit #1 on billboard

Which is weird because it hit #1 on Apple Music and US Spotify

It also hit #1 on Billboard Rhythmic Airplay Chart (I looked that one up lol)

but the radio spins was soooooo low and billboard factor in the radio so much they loweky kept it from reaching #1
