LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - Sophia Rosing has been permanently banned from the University of Kentucky.

The now former UK student is accused of physically assaulting a Black student worker while repeatedly using racial slurs.

UK President Eli Capilouto sent this message out to the campus community on Wednesday:

“We have pledged to keep you informed regarding our response to the racist assault captured on video last Sunday on our campus.

I want to emphasize that this behavior was disgusting and devastating to our community. We stand by our students who were targeted by this unacceptable hostility and violence.

I write to provide an update on the incident:

Ms. Rosing is no longer a student at the University of Kentucky.

Within hours of learning about this incident, we suspended her on an interim basis – a move that banned her from campus during our investigation.

I have also determined that she will not be eligible to re-enroll as a student.

She is permanently banned from the campus.

Although she is no longer a student, we must continue our investigations. That includes our cooperation with an investigation into criminal charges filed; our Code of Student Conduct disciplinary proceedings and racial harassment misconduct being reviewed by our Office of Institutional Equity and Equal Opportunity.

Further charges could be forthcoming based on these investigations.
As a community working wholeheartedly to prevent racist violence, we also must be committed to holding people accountable for their actions. The processes we have in place are essential.

I will be sharing more information about the next steps we are taking soon. Thank you for being a community that cares.”

Officials say Rosing has been charged with assault, public intoxication and disorderly conduct. She pleaded not guilty during an arraignment Monday afternoon.

She’s now out on bond.

Grand jury indicts former University of Kentucky student accused of racist attack

"A 22-year-old former University of Kentucky student accused of hurling racial slurs at a Black student desk clerk has been criminally indicted on all charges by a Fayette County Grand Jury.

The grand jury indicted Sophia Rosing Tuesday on all six counts that she was initially charged with: third-degree assault of a police officer, two counts of fourth-degree assault, second-degree disorderly conduct and alcohol intoxication.

The incident took place at Boyd Residence Hall where Rosing, a white student, entered and began taunting, using racial slurs and making derogatory comments toward Kylah Spring, a Black student, according to videos of the incident and court records. After police arrived, Rosing continued using slurs, resisted arrest and bit a police officer, according to the arrest report.

Videos of the incident went viral on social media.

In November, Rosing was permanently banned from campus and is not eligible to re-enroll, according to an email from President Eli Capilouto. She was also fired from jobs as a student influencer, and another job at Dillards.

The indictment alleges she kicked a UK police officer and bit and hit three other victims, including Spring.

Rosing is scheduled to be arraigned in circuit court on March 17 at 10:30 a.m. with Fayette Circuit Judge Lucy VanMeter. "
