Nah, this was just bad writing on Sam Levinson's part. Ashtray from season 1 is not the same Ashtray from season 2. In season 1 he was portrayed to be smarter than kids his age. This season dude didn't even notice a phone recording on the table 3 feet in front of him.

My favorite characters were Fez and Ash, so I was a bit disappointed how things ended for them…….
I enjoyed the last episode a lot and look forward to the next season. Hopefully it will be the last season though. No need to make it any longer in my opinion.

Doesn't mean they had any intention of having him on next season. I doubt we were going to get a scintillating ash coming of age arc.
If he didn't die the main catalyst for his characters existence in the show was gonna die.
Why we even doing this over a character that had next to no lines in the show lol. McKay spoke than him this season. What are we gonna do watch him stare hard at shit?

Idk. I just don’t see the creators choosing fez over ash. They obviously were planning something big. You could tell from ep 1 of this season. But I just don’t see them pulling a GOT like that
