This joint was excellent... Some great dialogue in here.

Agreed that Leslie Odom Jr. kinda stole the show as Sam Cooke.
Brotha that played Malcolm(Kingsley Ben-Adir) was decent but I think dude from Godfather of Harlem plays a better Malcolm personally.
Eli Goree was decent as Ali.

They aint really give too much for Aldis Hodge as Jim Brown in this joint.. that was my only minor complaint.

Yea bruh. I fuckin loved it. I had to temper my expectations cuz i didn't wanna geek myself up too much then be letdown. Plus this is regina king's directorial debut. I wanted so bad for this movie to be good and it didn't disappoint.

I loved how they showed how each man was at a very different point in their lives and had very different POV. And i loved how they each challenged each other.

The actors...

As i said, dude who played sam killed it. He stole every scene.
Playing Ali, is the most difficult role to play imo. Cuz ali so is iconic and charismatic. Dude held his own, actually did better than will smith imho.
I like what Aldis Hodge did. He played jim well imo. Very tempered, calm and even keeled. Jus like jim is imo.
I dont wanna bash the brother who played malcolm, cuz he gave a solid effort. But yea, the dude from Godfather of Harlem did a much better job. And it didnt help that this dude looks soooo much younger than malcolm was at that time irl. He gave a valiant effort. And i felt malcolms passion in his words.

Of course the best part was all the dialogue and the inner struggle of each man and how they expressed that struggle to each other.

How yall feel about the Malcolm and Ali dynamic?

Do yall feel like Malcolm was tryna use him, had his best interest at heart, that his intentions were self serving or some kind of combination of those things?

Idk. I'm from the ville and........ fuck it he was using him

Malcolm and Sam had an interesting dynamic. Like a little brother, big brother type of thing. Sam felt like Malcolm was always criticizing and stomping over him and his accomplishments, but Malcolm just wanted him to utilize his voice and popularity towards black empowerment. It was like they were hearing each other, but not listening.

Word. I feel like it mighta been time and place as well based on the movie. Them cats were in celebration mode and ready to party and the movie made it seem like Malcolm was on some debbie downer shit... so not only was Sam not being able to celebrate like they were expecting but to get lectured to as well? I could see how that would throw things off lol.

The message got through at the end tho which was dope

Word. They was like, yo I skipped out on a party for this??? Nigga pulled out vanilla icecream and ain't even have no snacks!

But word, Sam looked like he had been awakened at the very end. Malcolm was looking like, finally...that nigga is woke.

lol I lost it when they was like damn it's ironic you only copped some vanilla ice cream lmao.

That part when they were about to fight on the roof tho! We always see Malcolm portayed in movies and tv as the epitome of poise and being stoic... to see him lose his cool was interesting

Interesting question.

Malcolm was in a very wierd place at that time...

The 90 day suspension, finding out about Elijah's illegitimate children, realizing that Elijah had no real intention on setting up a separate state for blk ppl, wanting Elijah and the nation to get more involved in the community and matters specific to blk ppl not jus helping nation members. But he was still committed to the cause and the religion, he jus disagreed w the way Elijah was running things....so he prolly genuinely felt it was good for Ali to join the nation vs being a Christian.

It was jus wierd cuz malcolm was on his way out and ali was on his way in. Odd timing

I dont think malcolm was using ali tho.

I'm gonna rewatch this. But there were soooooo many little dialogue gems....

When Ali was jumpin on the bed, acting all silly. Jim was like "wtf nigga. What are you? A big baby?" i laughed out loud for real. I was like "duh. Ali was 22 irl. He was a big kid"

When jim told the young bodyguard "you coulda jus joined a gang." And the young dude said "well the nation is basically a gang, so yeah."

Prolly my fav line. When jim said..."malcolm you always saying. The honorable Elijah muhammad said this, the honorable Elijah Muhammad said that. But what do YOU say malcolm"....damn. shit was real af.

When sam ratted out Ali to malcolm for drinking liquor. I was like "WTF bruh."

When malcolm was tellin jim "yall three are our best weapons." And jim was like "we are not weapons we are ppl."

When Sam told malcolm "youre not on tv malcolm you dont have to sell us this hustle." lol lol

Jim and sam basically sayin malcolm was all doom and gloom and how not everything was blk n white.
