Akon: Africans no longer care about slavery but African Americans still blame the past

Btw Nigerians May be most successful non white groups in the US ....they have one of the highest median income in the states

It depends on the metric you use to measure success. I believe when if you're using something that compares where you end up to where you started, Nigerians or African immigrants in general are the most successful group in America.

Part of the reason is that when they come over here, they skip over all the shit that drags a lot of black people down. Sure some of those countries might not be as good as the U.S., but from an education standpoint, they aren't always much worse. So when they come over here for college, there isn't much holding them back.

There's something in this country that drags black people down, skips over the foreign black African people when they come over, and it goes away once arriving to college??? I want to know what that is.

Did ya'll not actually read what I said? A lot of African immigrants, particularly the Nigerians, migrate here specifically for college meaning that they didn't grow up here during their formative years. They weren't indoctrinated. They didn't have any encounters with the system. They didn't have to deal with any of the shit that might prevent a black kid from making it to college in the first place.

That makes a different. A lot of immigrants of all shades come to the U.S. with nothing. Making something out of that is tough. A lot of African Americans are born in the hole. Making something out of that can be tougher.

Still don't think you answered it

Niggas do lean on that shit too much to be honest. Effects can still be felt of course but too many excuses and expectations from same folk who enslaved.

If you can't understand that, I'm not sure what else to tell you.

You are losing me saying they didn't have to deal with what black people went thru once starting college. Do they don't have the same thing holding them back.

What's holding us back?
Would them same black immigrants have to deal with the same shit....While in and after college? They are still black and harassment and the system doesn't stop fucking with you because you are in college.

So are you talking about the breaking of the mentality of black people to make us think we are less than? Is this what you are saying holds us back?

I didn't say once starting college. You're misreading. My point was that there is a lot of pitfalls that prevent many young blacks, particularly black males, from even getting to college. If you're an African immigrant, and you migrated here for college, you didn't encounter those pitfalls.

At the end of the day, when you're coming from an African country, you might have had a legitimately harder road to walk, but the point is the U.S. is the Promised Land in many cases. So if you work hard where you're from and make it to the U.S., you basically did everything you need to give you a good chance at success. If you're born in the U.S., there is no Promised Land. If you're already in this country and have already been fucked by this country, it's hard to find the same motivation or confidence that you can succeed.

Interesting point. While I agree.....Most of us also don't have a support system. People that legit believe any of us can do anything.
I believe if you have a strong support system....Nothing else matters.
But we must also be real about all the issues.
A racist system...Check
But them crabs can break people too . Some even before the system gets to holds them back.

So what you're saying is the only thing holding black people back is their excuses and laziness? And they need to get over it, move on because, it was a long time ago and stop trying to get hand outs from white people?

This the second wildest thing I heard from a POC this week. Df is going on.

Yeah, the support system is everything. Also, something as simple as people recognizing a talent or skill a child may have and cultivating that. Unfortunately, in poor black communities if it isn't athletic or something artistic related, I don't believe the the children get that. My mother was a teacher. When I showed interest in science and math, she put me on a path where the sky was the limit for me simply by encouraging me in those avenues. I know when you look at some of those poorer areas, you have kids that would do well in STEM pursuits, but their minds are never opened to them.

Exactly. I think we have too many people with closed minds that try to force others to be closed as well.
Our kids are not allowed to dream sometimes. And from what j saw growing up a lot of parents are dream killers or they place adult problems on the kids...

This very topic is seen very well in a lot of threads so imagine how that festers offline when dealing with others or even kids.

When you assume shit you make an ass out of u and me lmao. Never said none of that shit. You took a statement that said A and jumped to Z.

No Doubt the affects of slavery and Jim crow can still be felt to an extent, but I find that it's over used and used like a crutch. There's many things we could be doing internally to improve our situation collectively.

Honestly it starts with us. Not saying we deserved to be victimized throughout the course of history but at the end of the day it's our internal weaknesses being exploited and preyed upon even when slavery popped off honestly.

Internal dysfunction is the root, and I say this cuz how highly I think of us. Essentially as opposed to victim mentality, we really was slipping and still are and thats the truth. This is the stronger more empowering disposition to have. As opposed to the woe is me mentality many negores love to grovel in.

It's interesting how you can say we must fix us and still hold us in high regards....Crazy huh?

hard to move on from something that still affects you to this day. the legacy of chattel slavery is enmeshed in every facet of society so no, akon, whose family migrated over here in a country that was already built by the ancestors of Black americans doesnt get to tell us to get over something.

if you wish to speak about Black empowerment/ advancement then do so in a way that doesnt undermine ppls livible experiences.

again, ”get over chattel slavery” is hilarious at best. ok so lets say we do get over chattel slavery...what do we do with the legacy of convict leasing, jim crow, and present day mass incarceration/ police repression? ...

other systems that were birthed from slavery??? lmaooo

dont listen to everybody just because they have money.
