Why are there so few rappers from the Midwest?

Virgina got a lot of stars, never saw why DC and Baltimore didn't make it.

A lot I think had to do with there being no real producers/labels in the area. VA has Pharrell & Timbo. We didn’t have anyone to set up the foundation. If anything them two the big reason why the rest of the DMV got exposure.

The real question is why doesn't Boston have any rappers coming out of the city. Besides Guru and homie who owned the Source can't think of q Boston rapper

OK, let's get back to the O/P

How come there was never a movement out of The Midwest?

Bone thug, Twista, do or die, crucial conflict had a whole fast rapping movement

Nelly,.chingy they had a whole movement

Em, d12, Royce had a movement

I think you can call n Kanye, common, big Sean and good music a movement as well

Then you you got chief keef and the whole drill movement....

This is just a bad take bruh 🤦🏿‍♂️🤷🏿‍♂️

Yep Drill def started in Chicago…but inly subject matter wise

One thing I do appreciate about drill is ots diversity production wise

Chicago Drill
Brooklyn Drill
UK Drill
Southern Drill

all sound different with Brooklyn and UK drill prob sounding the most alike cause they use the same producers

subject matter and slang (opps, thot, slidin, the super disrespectful bars) thats all Chicago

And Missy.

But CB and Trey Songz and Skillz also from Virginia and didn't blow with the help of those producers mentioned

The West Coast had a movement
The South had a movement

I can name a handful of Midwest rappers; Bone Thugs In Harmony, Common, Eminem/D-12/Proof, but they never really had a movement did they?

There was a point in time where I think it was Rolling Stone declared that the boom bap and lyricism of 80's/90's hip hop was still alive and well in Detroit.

Royce, Em, Obie, D12, Slum Village, Dilla, Guilty Simpson, Black Milk... Tha D had it going.

Fuck are you talking about? Between Detroit and Chicago, the midwest got mad rappers. That's not including St. Louis, Saginaw, Flint, Gary, Cleveland, etc, etc, etc,

He brought up Saginaw.

Good question

New Edition/Bell Biv Devoe was from Boston if you consider them rap/Hip Hop.

There was a big backpacker rap scene in the early 00s; Mr Lif, Acrobatic, Insight, 7L & Esoteric. They were supposed to be like Rawkus but they didn't make any hits like Ms Fat Booty or Get By.

There's some good names on that list that I forgot. But a few of those names are one hit/album wonders.

I'd still maintain that out of The East Coast, The West Coast, The South and The Midwest, The Midwest has produced the least amount of classics.

Also, I'd say out of the 4 main regions, The Midwest doesn't have it's own distinct sound.

Yeah it's not like there was a guy called J Dilla or anything.
