Welcome To aBlackWeb

Why are there so few rappers from the Midwest?

The West Coast had a movement
The South had a movement

I can name a handful of Midwest rappers; Bone Thugs In Harmony, Common, Eminem/D-12/Proof, but they never really had a movement did they?
TechN9Ne has Strange Music and does very well with that imprint.
Don’t forget Twista, Do or Die, Slum Village, Kanye with Good Music. Come on man

Because the record labels are in NYC, LA And ATL

u either relocating or u stuck

OK, so how come, aside from Motown in the 60s and 70s, nobody put a label together and came up with their own sound?

When I say a "movement" I mean;

1. Wu Tang representing Staten Island

2. No Limit representing New Orleans

3. Cash Money representing New Orleans

4. Death Row representing LA

5. Def Jam representing New York

6. Rocafella representing New York

7. Cold Chillin representing New York

Chicago, Detroit and Cleveland (also Cincinatti), along with ST Louis certainly have enough people to start a movement.

I can't think of the last time a label from Chicago came out and released several platinum selling artists.

There's some good names on that list that I forgot. But a few of those names are one hit/album wonders.

I'd still maintain that out of The East Coast, The West Coast, The South and The Midwest, The Midwest has produced the least amount of classics.

Also, I'd say out of the 4 main regions, The Midwest doesn't have it's own distinct sound.

Niggas bite Chicago OD. Drill, lingo, culture, etc.

And now a lot of cats starting to bite Detroit street rap heavy. That Payroll Giovanni, Babyface Ray, Icewear Veezo type shit. Mainstream rap about to have a bunch of those Detroit type beats. Watch

And the region has had lyrical guys killing it forever. And those guys still active Lu, Royce, Elzhi, etc.

Freddie Gibbs from Indiana on his run currently.

Doe Boy going crazy in Cleveland

when you take into account all types of hip hop (street shit, lyrical, fly shit, melodic), multiple generations.. they’re on top currently IMO.

We have way more diversity in the Midwest that's probably why.

But 'drill music' started in the Midwest...
Fast rapping started in Midwest (Bone, Twista, do or die)
Kanye made the soul chipmunk sampling popular.

U get a lil bit of everything from the midwest.

I would say the fast rap is a Midwest sound
