So this vid popped up on my YT.



TLDW: The caller was asking if they thought he should pay his two sisters' student loans. Basically what happened was that when they were younger, their parents got divorced because the mom cheated on the dad. The sisters went with the mom because they liked the guy she cheated with better than their dad. The caller thinks it was because the stepdad could give them gifts and expensive things at a time when the father couldn't. The caller stayed with his dad because that was his dad. Things picked up for the dad and he started doing well for himself. He tried to reach out to his daughters and form a relationship with them, but they weren't interested. At some point, they did come running back to him because of they needed help paying for school, but he refused. The father died and left everything to the caller. The inheritance wound up being worth over 10M. The sisters have since reached out to him asking if he could pay off their school dead, which is about 300K. The caller doesn't seem to care much about giving them money, but he doesn't want to do it because he feels like his father didn't want them to have anything and he doesn't want to dishonor his father's wishes.

What would you do in this situation?

I don’t think I’d care for reconnecting with them but if they just want their loans paid that are 300k, I’d probably pay it and keep it moving
 
For my part, if I suddenly got 10+ mil, I'd give a bunch of it away to charity anyway. If I can give it to strangers, I could give some to blood even if they are also basically strangers.

That said, I understand his dilemma of not wanting to give any of his dad's money to them when his dad didn't want them to have any of it.
 
Actually know someone in a similar scenario. He just cut them off because he felt like he was getting used and they only contacted him when they wanted something. The caller sounds the same

I'd take care of the loans under the understanding that you don't ask me for shit else again unless it's for your children. But as for the siblings themselves...fuck em

I can see the case for yes and no

Me being me I probably would still do it though because that is my family

I understand dad may have not wanted me to but I can’t inherit his displeasure with my sisters as well

His dad doesn't have any money...because he's dead and gave the money to him upon his death. It's his money.

Sidebar: I do find it interesting that by his own admission, he chose his dad’s side ‘because he’s my dad’, but he seemed to be confused as to how his sisters could choose their mom’s side…even though she’s their mom.

Yes, but the only reason he has that money is because his father left it to him, so it's not unreasonable for him to want to honor his father's wishes with how he uses that money. That's his choice.

I didn't say this before, because I tend to think about these sorts of things differently than most. But we have no information that suggests that his father's wishes were 'Don't give any of this money to your sisters'. And there are definitely ways he could have done that. If he has an estate and left money to anybody, that means he could have added any stipulation he wanted about how to the money is to be spent. But he chose not to do that.

The ONLY thing we know about the father's wishes as it relates to the money he had was 'When I die, the money goes to my son'.

it's an assumption that the father wanted his son to not give his sister's anything after he died.

He's not wrong either way. Because it's HIS money. But for me, his father's wishes about his own money become irrelevant when it's no longer his money.

You're right. I agree. When it was his money, he made it clear how he wanted it spent by not giving them any. But you agree that the money is no longer the father's and now belongs to his son.

So we gotta stop saying HIS money, in reference to the father. Because again, it's the son's money.

The son has a responsibility to carry on his pops legacy and his wishes

Oftentimes inheritance come w iron clad conditions…..
