COMMUNITY What’s it like to decide get pregnant as a Black Woman in America

This particular topic infuriates me. If I didn't know any better...

*throws conspiracy hat on*

...this shyt is being done deliberately to keep black women from birthing black babies. To prevent our people from populating.

They dismiss their concerns in hopes of some form of complications that prevents a full term birth. I probably sound farfetched on that....but this is AmeriKKKa. Especially given our history with the medical field.

*takes off conspiracy hat*

That is all.

My best friend lost his first child like this…

…his wife was complaining of pain, but they ain’t listen - she almost died too.

Shit was tragic…

Black people...particularly Black women during child birth, are treated MUCH differently than white women (people). First, you must remember, we aren't seen as full human beings...so a Black woman giving birth may as well be a dog or a cow, while the subsequent newborn child is deemed a puppy or calf. Any complaints of pain/discomfort are dismissed b/c the prevailing mindset in healthcare, since slavery, has been that we don't feel pain at all or very little. Also, "they" think we're lying or exaggerating when we complain of/present discomfort and/or pain b/c, according to "them", we're all drug addicts and just want pain meds.

It's not that "they" don't want us to populate...they simply DO NOT CARE if Black people live or die.

That won't help because black doctors do it too. Some of these problems will only be fixed when they lies that fuel them are eradicated.
Correct...to a degree!

Black doctors are taught/trained the same way white and other non-Black doctors are...medical school is racist af and they internalize a lot of the same racist ideology as the "others"

I will say tho, the majority of Black doctors I've worked with and had/have as my PCP, go above and beyond for their Black patients

But Black doctors from other countries are sometimes worse than white MDs, in my experience/observation

That's fair. Perhaps it was too harsh to say it won't help. It's probably more accurate to say that an increase in black physicians alone won't solve the problem.

If a black doctor can’t empathize with a black person but think their black is different than a patients black…..that’s a whole nother problem

I almost died giving birth to my daughter.

I think it’s important that we do not just look for Black providers but also educate ourselves. I had a Black OB/GYN who was not only dismissive but rude. She told me I couldn’t scream while I was in labor, she broke my water without consent (and yes, consent for this is necessary) AND I was only 2 centimeters dialated. She rushed my birth and my daughter became stuck, which resulted in a cesarean because once your water breaks..hospitals will give you 24 hours to birth the baby before they complain of infection.

Overall, seeking a Black provider is not enough. We have to be willing to do the work and educate ourselves. Had I known what I know now as a Black birth worker, I wouldn’t have even been induced…I would’ve stayed home.

Hiring a doula. Full spectrum Doulas are there through pregnancy and post partum, many even cook for you the first few weeks after giving birth..clean as well.
If you want to breastfeed, hiring a lactation professional.
Getting familiar with specialists relating to birth work and things needed after birth that mom and baby can benefit from (for example, a chiropractor).
Seeking EVIDENCE BASED information because all professionals do not practice this even doctors. Birth work has really been colonized like a mf.

I’m glad you and your daughter are ok.
What can we as men do to support our women?
What can we do to be more hands on and supportive?

And honestly, any children I have moving forward…my current OB/GYN is African and goes by evidence based information.

Like for example, research shows that it is safe for women who have had a cesarean to deliver naturally afterwards. HOWEVER, doctors are forcing women into repeat cesareans through inductions. Unnecessary inductions at that because most cesareans in the US are not medically necessary.

Listen and do the research.
Be supportive in helping her find a doula.
In my experience, you will have some doctors and midwives who hide behind the idea of being evidence based in a sense but the evidence they use is with scare tactics to again…enforce inductions and unnecessary cesareans.
It’s important to learn what to look out for with signs that something is wrong after giving birth, etc.
Be ready to advocate for her.

While I have been hella supportive and active in the health and birth of my two kids……where can I find information that can better help me. I’m past the age of wanting more kids but I would love to know to spread info.

Where can I find info that’s not based on what they say vs what’s needed or truth?
