Because Democrats and Republicans automatically qualify for the ballot and 3rd party candidates have to reach thresholds that differ from state to state.

Any entity that was serious about creating a third political party would have to first address this disparity, since as is, the rules are literally rigged against them.

Also, since the election is set up through delegates, the 3rd party only functions to siphon voters from the party it is most closely aligned to. Thus, the 3rd party actually ends up damaging the party it is most agreeable with, and bolsters the party that it is in most opposition against.

Until these disparities are fixed, showing up every 4 years to vote for a predetermined loser is not a serious vote.
