Yeah you can assume after beating her ass a week before he broke in at 3 am to bring flowers an apologize if you want to be naive. I agree if Trouble wasn't there he doesn't get killed. Thats a Captain Obvious point to make. But there's nothing saying he did or didn't know about her ex or situation. So going only off what's known the person who decided to break in, beat the woman once again, then shoot Trouble takes the blame for what happened.

I would love to see the stats on people that actually used a gun to defend themselves from violence.

I know it's better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it. But the reality of it is If somebody pulls out on you first, your gun doesn't mean a damn thing most times. Crime is all about the element of surprise and opportunity.
