In order to not have a competitive imbalance in the NFL, when a player is released, he goes to waivers

What this means is, the team that has the number 1 waiver priority will first be given an opportunity to claim that player

If the player goes unclaimed, the player becomes a free agent

Imagine Kansas City signing him? That would greatly increase their chances to win a Super Bowl. I haven't looked it up yet but I think their waiver priority is near the bottom of the league.

Basically, the worse you are as a team, the higher your waiver priority is.
