When I say this I mean so in the sense of one) politically it could be detrimental; that during a war concentrating on something that will look like trivial gamesmanship by the Dems will be petty in many eyes, the whole this is not the time for this attitude and the ppl may frown upon it with everything else going on

two) As you said being united in the eyes of the world will be extremely important because one of America's life lessons was the problem of divisiveness that happen during the Vietnam War, which hurt more than fighting an enemy that refused to do long pitched battles.
