FEC Reportedly Investigating Whether NRA Received Illegal Donations from Russia During 2016 Election

A new report indicates that the Federal Election Commission (FEC) is preparing to investigate the National Rifle Association (NRA) for allegedly accepting illegal contributions from Russian entities during the 2016 election. Since the NRA offered significant support to Donald Trump‘s bid for the presidency, this may prove relevant to the ongoing investigations of the mogul’s connection to Russia.

Politico states that the FEC launched a preliminary review of the NRA after the left-leaning American Democracy Legal Fund (ADLF) asked them to investigate alleged connections between the gun advocacy organization and foreign nationals with links to Vladimir Putin. The NRA declined to comment about the probe, though previous estimates show that the groups and its lobbying arm contributed about $30 million to Trump’s campaign.

An NRA attorney told Senator Ron Wyden‘s (D-OR) office last month that the organization was already facing an FEC inquiry about “possible Russia donations.” ADLF treasurer Brad Woodhouse said he received confirmation that the FEC was acting based on their complaint, and an FEC official explained their investigation process by saying that they launch probes when they have reason to suspect campaign finance laws were violated.
