Zinke Says ‘Konnichiwa’ To Japanese-American Congresswoman

During a House Natural Resources Committee hearing on Wednesday, Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke greeted a fourth-generation Japanese-American congresswoman by saying “konnichiwa,” a traditional midday Japanese greeting.

Rep. Colleen Hanabusa (D-HI) on Wednesday asked Zinke if he was planning to commit to funding a National Park Service program this year, that gives out grants toward the preservation of confinement camps that Japanese-Americans were held in during World War II. Hanabusa herself is a granddaughter of two internees who were held during World War II.

“Are you committed to continue to grant programs that are identified, I believe, as the Japanese American Confinement Sites grants program which were funded in 2017? Will we see them funded again in 2018?” Hanabusa asked.

“Oh, konnichiwa,” Zinke said.

Hanabusa then corrected Zinke, saying she thought it was still morning— “I think it’s still ‘ohayo gozaimasu,’ but that‘s OK,” she said, referencing the phrase for “good morning.”

Zinke paused and then suggested he would fund the program and promised to work with Hanabusa on the issue.

Putin Critic Nikolai Glushkov Found Strangled To Death In London

LONDON (AP) — British police said Friday they have launched a murder investigation into the death of London-based Russian businessman Nikolai Glushkov after an autopsy revealed that he died from compression to the neck.

Counterterrorism detectives are leading the case “because of the associations Mr. Glushkov is believed to have had,” the Metropolitan Police force said.

Russia’s top agency for major crimes, meanwhile, said it has launched its own investigation into Glushkov’s death, which it is probing as murder.

Glushkov, 68, was an associate of Boris Berezovsky, a Russian oligarch and strong Kremlin critic who died under disputed circumstances in 2013.

Glushkov was found dead at his south London home on Monday. His death came a week after former spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia were left critically ill from nerve agent poisoning in the city of Salisbury.

The London police force said “at this stage there is nothing to suggest any link to the attempted murders in Salisbury,” and they said there was no evidence that Glushkov has been poisoned.

British authorities say the substance that poisoned the Skripals is a powerful Russian-developed nerve agent known as Novichok. A British police officer who responded to the attack in Salisbury is in serious condition, and police say 131 people may have come into contact with the nerve agent.

U.K. police say “there are no wider public health concerns” around the investigation into Glushkov’s death.

Britain has accused the Russian government of responsibility for Skripals’ poisoning and British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson said Friday it is “overwhelmingly likely” that Russian President Vladimir Putin himself ordered the attack. Putin’s spokesman denounced the comment as “shocking and inexcusable.”

In light of the Salisbury attack, British police are looking again at the deaths of more than a dozen Russians in Britain, including Berezovsky.

After his death in 2013, an inquest failed to determine whether Berezovsky, who was found hanged at his home near London, had killed himself or died from foul play.

Glushkov, a longtime associate of the oligarch, had worked for various Berezovsky enterprises including the car factory AvtoVAZ and flagship Russian airline Aeroflot.

He was arrested in 1999 and put on trial for embezzling $7 million from Aeroflot. In 2004, he was sentenced to three years and three months in prison, but released because of time served.

Russian media reported that Glushkov was granted political asylum in Britain in 2010.

In 2017, a Moscow court reviewed Glushkov’s case and sentenced him in absentia to eight years for reportedly embezzling more than $122 million from Aeroflot.

Last year, Glushkov appeared on a list published by the Russian Embassy in London of Russian citizens wanted for serious crimes whom the U.K. had refused to extradite.

It said Russia had sought his extradition in 2015 “for committing a number of severe financial offences on the territory of Russia,” but the British government refused.

Donald Trump Jr.’s Wife Vanessa Reportedly Hires Criminal Defense Attorney For Divorce

Vanessa Trump will reportedly be represented in her divorce from Donald Trump Jr. by David Feureisen, a New York attorney specializing in criminal defense.

Feureisen’s hiring, first reported by Page Six, is an unusual choice to oversee a divorce case, especially considering the amicable nature of the separation. The couple released a joint statement on Thursday confirming the divorce, writing, “After 12 years of marriage, we have decided to go our separate ways.”

“We will always have tremendous respect for each other and our families. We have five beautiful children together and they remain our top priority,” the statement continued.

It remained unclear on Friday why the wife of the president’s eldest son hired a prominent criminal defense attorney for the case. The move could reveal she’s concerned the divorce will be a difficult process, several outlets and experts suggested.

“It’s a curious choice if it’s an amicable separation,” New York attorney Bonnie Rabin told Page Six on Friday. “If it’s an amicable situation, you wouldn’t be highlighting the criminal aspect.”

News of the divorce arrived almost simultaneously with bombshell reports indicating Special Counsel Robert Mueller subpoenaed the Trump family business, the Trump Organization, demanding documents about Russia.

John Kelly Reportedly Said Tillerson Was on The Toilet When He Told Him He Was Getting Dumped

Chief of Staff John Kelly told a group of reporters during an off-the-record meeting on Friday that when he called Rex Tillerson to inform him that President Donald Trump would soon fire him, the secretary of state was on the toilet, battling a stomach bug.

Kelly’s off the record conversation with reporters was ostensibly meant to be kept quiet, but both Axios and The Daily Beast — whose reporters were not invited to the gathering — have reported on it, with the help of anonymous sources.

And according to the Beast’s stunning report, Kelly painted a picture of his awkward call with Tillerson to inform him he would soon be out:

“Tillerson, Kelly told the room, was suffering from a stomach bug during a diplomatic swing through Africa, and was using a toilet when Kelly broke the news to him.”

The off-the-record conversation was intended to calm down reporters hot on the trail of apparent turmoil in a White House that has been roiled by surprise staff shake-ups as of late.

The Beast reported that Kelly’s embarrassing comments about Tillerson stunned their sources:

Sources were stunned that, even in an off-record setting, Kelly would say this—to a room filled with White House officials and political reporters—about Tillerson, who does not officially leave the State Department until the end of the month.

Kelly is routinely touted as one of the more mature members of Trump’s top brass and has often been branded as one of the “adults” in charge.

The comment was especially bizarre given Kelly’s reported past cover for Tillerson. The chief of staff tried for months to keep the secretary of state in his post, The New York Times reported, and fumed at his dismissal
.

Well, if you thought Tillerson suffered enough public humiliation this week when the president fired him in a tweet, always remember: in this White House it can always get worse.

Oh the irony...
