Under Pressure From Tax Probe, Trump’s Older Sister Steps Down From Judgeship

President Donald Trump’s older sister, Maryanne Trump Barry, has stepped down from her role as a federal appellate judge and thus ended the scrutiny into whether she and her siblings’ fraudulent tax schemes constitute a breach of judicial conduct.

According to a Wednesday New York Times report, the investigation was launched due to the Times reporting that Barry and her siblings financially benefited from chicanery and fraud committed in the 1990s.

Barry, 82, is reportedly an inactive judge and one step from full retirement. She resigned in February. On Feb. 1, individuals who brought complaints to the judicial conduct council’s attention received a letter from a court official saying the probe was receiving the council’s “full attention,” the Times reported. The investigation has since been dropped, as retired judges are not subject to conduct investigations.

Scott Shuchart, a lawyer who filed one of the complaints against Barry, told the Times he finds it “galling” that a minor change in her retirement status inculcates her against an investigation.

Assange Allies Try To Frame Indictment As Blow To Press Freedom

In the hours since a wild-haired Julian Assange was arrested at the Ecuadorian embassy in London, his allies have sought to cast the WikiLeaks founder as a falsely-accused free press champion.

“This sets a dangerous precedent for all media organizations and journalists in Europe and elsewhere around the world,” Assange attorney Jennifer Robinson said at a Thursday press conference. “This precedent means that any journalist can be extradited for prosecution in the United States for having published truthful information about the United States.”

Assange was not charged with publishing classified information, but for allegedly helping former military intelligence staffer Chelsea Manning try to crack a Defense Department password.

Robinson told journalists in London on Thursday that Assange planned on fighting the extradition request. WikiLeaks editor-in-chief Kristinn Hrafnsson added that Assange has been charged for “conspiracy to commit journalism.”

Assange’s U.S. legal team is adapting the same narrative as his London lawyers. Barry Pollack, Assange’s U.S. counsel, told TPM in a statement that “the factual allegations against Mr. Assange boil down to encouraging a source to provide him information and taking efforts to protect the identity of that source.”

“Journalists around the world should be deeply troubled by these unprecedented criminal charges,” Pollack added.

Assange faces a separate British charge for violating his bail conditions.

WikiLeaks has for years been predicting that Assange would be prosecuted due to his publishing activity. Prosecutors’ decision to instead charge him with conspiracy to commit computer hacking does not appear to have changed the organization’s messaging strategy.

Robinson, the London attorney, told journalists that she had just spoken with Assange in a police holding cell.

“He said, ‘I told you so,'” Robinson added.

Gaetz Trolls Schiff With ‘PENCIL Act’ To Remove Him From Intel Committee

Rep. Matt Gaetz’s (R-FL) latest legislative push reeks of brown nosing.

On Wednesday, the uber-conservative lawmaker shamelessly introduced a House resolution named after President Trump’s moniker for Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) — “pencil neck” — to get Schiff kicked off the House Intelligence Committee, which he chairs. The resolution also pushed for the revocation of Schiff’s security clearance.

In the text of the resolution, Gaetz suggested that Congress couldn’t trust Schiff to objectively assess and share classified information with Congress because he “slandered” Trump with his public remarks that he believed the Trump campaign colluded with Russia to win the election.

“Schiff has proven himself untrustworthy by advancing falsities about the President of the United States, Donald J. Trump, as relating to unfounded allegations of collusion with the Russian Federation,” the resolution says.

All the Republican members of the House Intelligence Committee recently signed a letter calling on Schiff to resign his chairmanship over his longstanding belief that evidence of collusion within the Trump campaign exists. Republican members seized on Attorney General William Barr’s assessment of special counsel Robert Mueller’s report — in which Barr stated no collusion occurred — as proof the Schiff is not trustworthy. President Trump even called on Schiff to resign from Congress after Barr’s assessment was released.
