In the last decade it became apparent that cyber crime and social media "trolling" became the new phase of countries trying to weaken and undermine eachother.
In the last decade (2010 to 2019), pretty much the every citizen in the US got their info stolen, most of us multiple timew. Almost all these hacks were traced back to russia and china. Russia and china also hacked a ton of companies and stole their technology. The DNC got hacked and emails got stolen, that was Russia. A few years ago a govt database got hacked and the names of addresses of goverment workers got stolen, im talking cops, teachers etc, some of those names and addresses got posted online, that was blamed on china. And also, a few years ago the military even got hacked. I dont remember who it was but it might have been the pentagon or some branch of the military. That was Russia.
And then on social media, we call them russian trolls but its actually more russian operatives. They find anything causing diviseness in America and make posts for both sides to cause a divide.
For example, a study found that there were more Russian trolls that made Black lives Matter AND All Lives Matter than the actual activists on both sides. Same whenever a cop shot an unarmed black person. Same when it came to ISIS propaganda when US went into Syria.
List goes on. Just recently CNN uncovered a ring based out of Kenya where the Russians were paying like a group of 50 people to act like Black Americans and make posts that supported violence against cops. The hope ofcourse is that someone in the US will get influenced by these posts and either a white racist kill a black person or a black person shoot a cop.
Ofcourse all these are real issues in America. Black Lives Matter is real, cops killing unarmed black people is real, racial inequality is real, the list goes on. But Russia sees these real issues and uses social media to pour gas on the flame. Its one of the main reasons why tribalism is America is worse than ever and every side literally sees the other side as the enemy.
These are big examples but the list goes on. im sure russian operatives are also a huge percentage of the people who like and retweet divise posts made by trump. Same whenever nancy pelosi attacks trump. Same with qa anon posts. And same with these blaming corona on g5 posts.
This long ass post just to say Russia been killing the US in the cybercrime and social media wars. Other countries also help Russia, but Russia also been doing the same to European and African countries.
All in all, like I said, love them or hate them, you gotta give them props for how good of a job they are doing with this online cold war.
