Heard it on a podcast (can't remember which) in the summer that, this year, the guy responsible for giving the go-ahead for the current adidas deal was fired by adidas, shortly after a new senior staffer arrived. This make sense given there's been reports as early as 2016 'til more recently May 2021, that adidas are unhappy with the on-field product and shirt sales.

The pay-rise is likely sign of a lack of faith by the Glazers in an immediate return of on-field success. As a result, also a sign of desperation in retaining Woodward's business negotiating skills, in order to keep revenue at a sufficient level.
