I used to get it in in my day (||) and I can tell you what you want is a good shaft (||)(||) and a good tip (||) (||)(||). sorry but there's no way to say that without it sounding mad gay.

A lot of people will buy a heavy cue like a 21 because you can get a nice sounding break off that... don't do that. Get the lightest and cheapest butt that you can balance comfortably in your hand (|||)(|||)(||)(||) and spend all the real money on the shaft and put a nice tip on it and get good chalk.

My current joint was like 200 - 300 bucks total but I have a more expensive one that I inherited that I just use as a breaking cue because it's too heavy.
