People that put pronouns on nametags or Zoom name irk me now. Like, why?

I was wondering about this and the best I could think of is it's to make people comfortable expressing their pronouns without having to make it a thing. But nah... I can't make myself not think it's either a little silly or performative when a guy with a full on beard named John has he/him next to his shit. Like even if you got a vagina down your pants I was probably gonna call you he/him anyway but that's not even the case.

the whole pronoun shit irritates the fuck outta me. Like how you gonna try to police how I refer to you when you ain't even around??? I explained it to my middle daughter as me trying to police white folks from calling me a "n_gger" when I ain't around. I KNOW I've been called that shit plenty of times, as has she and every other Black person in this country and there ain't shit we can do about it. Likewise, whether you want to be referred to as "they" or whatever when someone is talking about you when you're not around, you don't control that and you have to accept that you will never control how someone refers to you when not in your presence.

I hate this things

This is a terrible analogy. I don't want anybody referring to me as a nigger whether I'm there or not.

bruh I think it’s just saying they prefer to be called a certain way. Of course when you’re not around you can’t police what people say. But that don’t mean accept it

How often have you referred to someone using a pronoun while they're standing there? Normally you'd just use that person's name, right?

The convo that sparked that back and forth with my daughter came from her trying to tell me some gossip about Ezra Miller. Personally I don't give a fuck about celebs enough to warant a conversation, but dude been wildin out according to my daughter and as I was talking about him I noticed she was going out of her way to refer to him as "they" every time I said "him" and finally she said "Daddy, Ezra's trans and their pronouns are 'they'" to which I responded "Is Ezra around here??? No? Then what difference does it make?" and that's when I made that comparison.

You cannot police someone's speech when you're not around. In that sense, I know I've been referred to by pretty much any racial epithet you can think of by white folks when I'm not in their presence. Do I like it? Of course not. Can I do anything about it? No. No one can. And this is what people who announce their pronouns are looking to do: police the way you refer to them when they're not within earshot.

i wrong a whole paragraph in response and realized who I’m talking to you. Your daughter respects what Ezra wants to be called and you don’t that it. No need for the fake issue you’re creating

My point is: when has it ever mattered? I'm not creating an issue: The people that demand certain pronouns are creating the issue when, really, it's stupid and trivial. There's far more important shit we have to deal with in our day-to-day lives than trying to remember what pronouns someone want you to use. Pronouns are simply not important enough to even register on most folks' radar.
