I do think the show is suffering from the same problem snl has now in that the reality is more ridiculous than a writer's room can make fun of or satirize. The rise of the alt right and fascism and the erosion of democracy was more interesting when it wasn't a daily occurrence.
They probably didn't tell him exactly what would happen in the scene to get his authentic reaction. Similar to the episode with Victoria Neumann when Butcher sent her that ass pic!
