The 10 Jays: Jay-Z’s Through Time

The write-ups are fine but you can't say Jay set trends and then turn around and name the trend he's jumping on or the swagger that he's jacking for that particular era.

That's my only gripe with Jay fans. If ya'll think he's the best rapper ever, I don't agree but I won't begrudge you that. However, ya'll gotta stop acting like he has been the one setting trends. He hasn't.

He set trends and also shifted w the times. Both can be done. I feel Jay understood early on in his career, he was gonna have to get down w certain things that were already rocking to keep pace w the game. He was one of the 1st major east coast artist to start featuring southern artist..juvenile, UGK

throw these eras in the trash and keep the rest:

bald head jay
In My Lifetime jay
Wearing the 4-5/96 Bulls jay
euro jay
Mr. Knwoles-Carter Jay

This is kinda what I'm talking about. People tend to overstate what Jay does. You didn't say this, but I've literally heard people say stuff like "Jay started whole East Coast/Down South Collaboration shit." That's nonsense. Check this list.

Jay was just part of the mix. He added to it no doubt, but was kinda following suit. Even if you look at the Ha remix which came out in 99. That wasn't an example of Jay embracing southern rap. That was him seeing a dude (Juvenile) having a lot of success and requesting to jump on the track and catch some of that shine. He did the same thing with Kendrick Lamar with the Bitch Don't Kill My Vibe Remix. Jay is good as hell at reading the writing on the wall and making the right moves, but he isn't a trend leader.
