Although Sting appeared to be cool with Juice WRLD sampling his 1993 song “Shape Of My Heart” for the Nick Mira-produced hit single “Lucid Dreams,” things have apparently changed. In a series of since-deleted tweets, Mira blasted Sting and his team for allegedly threatening a new lawsuit.

“Fuck @OfficialSting and his WHOLE team,” he wrote on Saturday (November 17). “After taking 85% of Lucid Dreams (for interpolating Shape of My Heart, NOT EVEN sampling) he threatened to take us to court for trying to get any %. Sting ALSO flexed stealing our money and said it put his grandkids through college.”

He followed up with, “everybody put a FUCK @OfficalSting in the comments if you real.”

Last month, Sting told Billboard “Lucid Dreams” was a “beautiful interpretation that is faithful to the original song’s form” and joked the song’s royalties will “put my grandkids through college.”

The song, which was included on Juice WRLD’s debut album Goodbye & Good Riddance, reached the No. 2 spot on the Billboard 100 chart and No. 1 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.

Now, it’s looking more like a lucid nightmare.







Is Sting being an asshole or y'all riding with him?

I can’t hear this sample & not think of It Was Written. I’m willing to bet money when they did the sample they didn’t know it was originally a Sting song. Either way, you hit off the sample, you pay up. That non-singin nigga will be aight

Should've cleared the sample/song. He thought just because he interpolated the main guitar melody he was good. Nah, b. The owner just gon take a lil less from ya ass opposed to if you did sample the loop.

One of the many reason why producers don't even sample like that no mo. You've seen what happened to Robin Thicke and Pharrell.

According to homie from Trackmasters he heard the sample at the end of the Porfessional
 
Yea idk who Juice World is but Sting is internationally known on the mic.

Producer didnt try change the music at all. He basically rapped and not very well over a Sting song.

Sting hurt homies feelings tho when he flexed about his payments. Bottom line sting about that paper

Something ain't right.

If it's really an interpolation, as Juice WRLD claims, they didn't need to get clearance for it at all; you just have to get a mechanical license (cheap as fuck), and credit the original artist, or in the case of a musical piece, the original musician. This is why Nile Rodgers is credited on Sugar Hill Gang's "Rappers Delight"; the bassline from Chic's "Good Times" was replayed by a session musician but he was the original bassist for the Chic song.

An interpolation is when you replay music another artist has created, producers that sample typically do this when an artist refuses to clear a sample or is trying to gouge you on the cost to clear it. They don't have to ask permission at all, you just have to license it properly and credit the artist and there's nothing they can do about it. Under Section 115 of the Copyright Act, anyone is entitled to record a song which has already been released publically by another artist, irrespective of a copyright owner’s permission. The mechanical license is easy as hell to get (you just submit a form to the original artist telling them you're getting a cumpulsory license) and ultimately it only costs you 9.1 cents per unit per song that the interpolated music is in as long as the song doesn't run longer than 5 minutes. Past 5 minutes the mechanical fee changes to 1.75 cents per minute, per song.

There's no legal way Sting got 85% of that track's revenue if it was really an interpolation. The mechanical license is legally set in stone and would take an act of congress to change it; so there's that. As long as they paid the mechanical license fee and credited Sting or whomever, they should have been good.

I was just bout to say how these niggas say they didn't sample it, when all they did to the Sting song was add some drum.
