Vimeo Removes Alex Jones, Infowars Content From Site, Issues Refund
Vimeo is the latest social media or online streaming service to remove the content of far-right conspiracist Alex Jones from its platform, Business Insider reported Monday.
A company spokesperson told BI Sunday that some of Jones’ recent content violated Vimeo’s ban on discrimination and hateful speech. The company issued Jones a refund after the boot, claiming it didn’t want to “profit from content of this nature in any way,” the spokesperson said.
Allowing Jones’ “Inforwars” content to remain on the platform caused a rift in the company last week, according to BI.
In recent days, Apple, Facebook, YouTube, Spotify, Stitcher, LinkedIn and Pinterest have blocked or removed most of Jones’ programming, citing policies against the spread of misinformation and the encouragement of harassment. Jones has been trying to recoup some of his losses by spreading unhinged theories, promoting his website, mobile app and encouraging listeners to purchase the diet supplements and survivalist gear.
Twitter Temporarily Suspends Alex Jones After Tweet Calling For Violence Against Media
America’s leading conspiracy theorist Alex Jones was finally suspended from Twitter, as he caught a week long tweeting ban for violating the company’s policies on violent rhetoric.
Jones, who has been banned or partially banned from nearly every other major social media platform, was hit with the suspension over a video in which he told viewers to use “battle rifles” against the mainstream media. As part of the suspension, Jones was forced to delete the post and cannot tweet or retweet for seven days, though he can still go through his timeline and isn’t completely locked out.
While other social media bans on Jones and his ilk targeted the pages for his website Infowars, the Twitter temporary ban did not impact the outlet’s account.
Other sites who have taken action against Infowars and Jones include YouTube, Apple, Facebook, Spotify, and Vimeo, all of which cited anti-hate or anti-violence policies when taking action against the conspiracy theorist. Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey did not directly follow the other social media outlets in targeting Jones, as he claimed Infowars and Jones did not violate any of the site’s rules.
However, after that tweet, reporters found that Jones had in fact violated Twitter’s rules and notified the company about it, which ultimately led to the temporary ban.
What did Alex do or say for this reaction tho? Alex is a crazy guy and I stopped watching him years ago BUT not everything that man says is bullshit and the last time I checked America still had freedom of speech...right?
These are private companies that are shutting him down. Not the federal government.
