SPINOFF: How important are Names?

while planning or in the process of creating our own, are we to starve? and that doesnt address the process of renting n owning, theres discrimination from landlords to realtors and even banks. housing discrimination is real and not everyone is gonna be able to live in a commune.

what is ur solution for the interim?

They're going to discriminate anyway when my Black ass shows up for the interview, apartment, loan officer etc.

I would never give my child a white name. But I do understand the society that he was born into. Clearly he will face obstacles no matter what his name is but we don't live in a vacuum. If he was of age today he could take over his mother or his father's businesses and be good but he will still face hurdles. Owning your own doesn't mean you won't get judged because of your name.

Doesn't set a good precedence. You're gonna tell ur son to cut off his dreads because society's gonna judge him? Gonna tell your daughter to not wear her hair natural and straighten it because society will judge her? When does it stop? They're gonna get judged regardless. Stop letting society control your life.

Doesn't bother me..

But I don't see us complaining about other groups of ppl when their name sounds like something you catch on your feet.

True be told every group of ppl have fucked, sorry, unique names.

We as black ppl create unique names...fact, we are a unique/amazing group of ppl.

did Baby Future, or whatever the kid is called, not inspire the thread? Future isn't even a black name.

Didn't think that was the basis of this discussion, that kid's born rich and will probably never have to worry about a job interview.

Don't know if you could tell but I am Rastafari so the things that you mentioned are of no concern in my house. Hope that didn't come across wrong because I didn't mean any disrespect.

Agreed.

a discussion of names like Baby Future n Super inspired this thread tho, no? then what u got from the discussion in this thread is tht ppl wanna give their kids white names to tiptoe around discrimination from white ppl? simplifying like a mf.

great post. read an article on black american naming traditions over the yrs. ironically, even tho i think its short-sighted, even the questionable choices like La(dash)a r radical in a way thts admirable.
