Its a part of AAVE slang. Its roots may have been ugly but a LOT of words in standard Anglo English started out as something “bad” or derogatory

There is a declarative and clearly defined difference between

Nigga and Nigger.

Choosing not to use the word is a matter of preference akin to someone not using profanity.
