I believe he thought he had social media and a collective world outrage on his side but some leaders; Putin, Jong Un, Trump dgaf about optics. There no empathy when dealing with tyrants.
I'm sure Putin laughed the hardest as he was basically able to torture him for 3 yrs vs killing him outright with the first poison attempt
He should have continued to fight while on the run. His voice and reporting was more powerful then him being a dead martyr imo
