He probably just likes fighting. Most of t he engagement in those African wars have been bombings and drone work. There's not much he could have done their as a soldier. On top of that, those African conflicts haven't been publicized nearly as much as Ukraine.

African conflicts are incredibly hard to wrap your head around what is actually going on. I tried to figure out the civil war in the Congo one time and I’m not sure I was any less confused than when I started.

There are a few constants for most African conflicts.
1) Meddling from form colonial powers
2) Friction between different ethnic groups that share nations created with no regard for traditions and established history.
3) Resources and potential wealth generating ventures that are up for grabs
