Kay Slay had a mixtape series called The Drama Hour, not to be confused with his Hot 97 radio show that was also called The Drama Hour. When I was living on the Jersey Shore I used to take the train up to NYC and cop mixtapes on 125th st. This was circa 2003/04, when people were still buying CDs. Before Youtube. I guess mp3s were common around that time (i used to use Kazaa) but Kay Slay was getting stuff before the internet.
Those mixtapes always had brand new music from Dipset, D-Block, Rocafella, State Property, Nas, Snoop, 50 Cent and G-Unit and whoever else was poppin months before the songs officially came out. I remember I used to get the tapes and I'd be mad because I didn't know how to upload the CD to the internet, or I'm not sure if there were any websites that were good for hosting entire mixtapes, and if there were sites like that, my computer wasn't fast enough to do it.
There's a website called Mixcloud that has some of these tapes I'm referring to.
The reason I'm mentioning these tapes is because he was dropping them every other day. I mean, I remember copping part 1 and 2, then coming back a few days later and disc 5 was already out. He probably dropped this entire mixtape series 1-9 in about 2 or 3 weeks. And they were all unreleased songs from known artists. Yeah there was always a Papoose freestyle and a Saigon freestyle, but otherwise he was getting stuff before the radio, before MTV, before the internet.
If you ever get a chance try to download the entire Drama Hour series 1-9. It's worth it.
