Protests breakout in Chicago after man shot by Chicago police officer dies

CHICAGO — Chicago police say a man fatally shot by an officer was “exhibiting characteristics of an armed person” and officers tried to question him.

Chicago Police Department spokesman Anthony Guglielmi tweeted that when officers on foot tried to question the man Saturday evening a confrontation ensued and he was shot.

Larry Merritt, a fire department spokesman, says the man was shot Saturday evening in the South Shore neighborhood and was taken to Jackson Park Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Guglielmi says a weapon was recovered at the scene but did not say where or whether it was on the man.

A crowd has gathered at the scene, creating a tense situation with police, who have cordoned off the area.

The Chicago Sun-Times says scuffles broke out between protesters and police officers holding batons who had cordoned off the area.

Chicago police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi says no officers were injured.

At about 5:30 p.m., officers on foot saw the man "exhibiting characteristics of an armed person" and went to question him, according to tweet by CPD spokesman Anthony Guglielmi. A confrontation then ensued and the man was shot, he said. A weapon was recovered at the scene, Guglielmi said.

The incident occurred near 71st Street and Clyde on the South Side.

After the shooting, crowds gathered and, at times, scuffled with police. The crowd chanted, "No justice, no peace."

The man was pronounced dead at Jackson Park Hospital, fire officials said.

Witnesses said the man was shot several times.

Witness Allen Davis said that police saw the man's holster and asked him for his concealed carry permit, but when he reached for it, police shot him.

Protesters, police scuffle after officer fatally shoots man in South Shore

A crowd of protesters sparred with a group of Chicago police officers Saturday evening near the scene where an officer fatally shot a man during a confrontation in the South Shore neighborhood.

The shooting happened about 5:30 p.m. in the 2000 block of East 71st Street, according to police and Chicago Fire Department officials.

Officers on foot saw “a man exhibiting characteristics of an armed person,” and a “confrontation” ensued when they tried to question him, Chicago police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi tweeted. An officer opened then fire.

The man, thought to be in his 30s, was pronounced dead at Jackson Park Hospital, CFD spokesman Larry Merritt said. No officers were hurt, and a weapon was recovered at the scene, according to Guglielmi.

People outside the crime scene after the shooting claimed a female officer shot the man, a neighborhood barber, at least five times in the back as he ran away, and that the officer was taken away from the scene in a police vehicle afterward as the crowd formed.

Dozens of officers were called to help control a tense scene as more than 100 people crowded around, chanting at police, “Who do you serve? Who do you protect?”

Tension boiled over about 7:30 p.m. as police tried to push protesters back from the scene, with officers hitting at least one man with a baton and some protesters punching back. Police could be seen taking a few people into custody.

The scene cooled off for awhile until more people flooded the area about 8:30 p.m., with some throwing glass bottles at officers. At least three people were then taken into custody.

Gloria Rainge, 41, said the slain man went by the nickname “Snoop,” had a 5-year-old daughter and ran a barbershop at 71st Street and Euclid Avenue.

Rainge said she was walking out of a nearby Walgreens store when she saw the officer tell the man not to sell loose cigarettes. The man said he wasn’t, the argument escalated and the officer fired as he ran away, Rainge said.

“He was cool, laid back, very intelligent,” Rainge said.

“We just want to live,” another woman at the scene said. “Our black kids keep getting killed. We just want to live.”

Black folks need to start retaliating or just stay their ass home.

"Armed characteristics" doesn't even sound like a crime. You've got a right to be armed. White folks around grocery stories and rallies for the president having 'armed characteristics".

And people had the nerve to disagree when I said we were regressing back to Jim Crow.

Fair.

These protest have to stop.

Why didnt he let them passively disarm him? And the he goes for it?

FOH, this is why BLM failed.

Shaun King set the standard.

Dont mean the standard aet is the right one.

Common sense on ol boys part would have gone a long way.

I've seen cops brutalize people who were being 1000% compliant.

There was the recent video of the guy sitting on the curb being compliant with the officer and STILL getting tazed; he posed absolutely no threat.

I saw a video where cops told a suspect to lie down on the ground and while he was obeying the cops orders, he was violently kicked in the face....
For no reason!

Damned if you do, damned if you don't.
