Depends on what you're interested in, but you can get real time updates from news sites, sports apps, journals, etc... Hell, when you do find something accurate through social media, half the time it's just a link to another source anyway.
If you got an Android phone, it probably has a feature that let's you put your interests and resources and updates a hub with all the information it believes you would care about. There's absolutely no reason you would need social media to stay up-to-date on anything.

lol Aside from the tweets coming from people on the scene, most of the updates you get from social media literally come from the news sites. Hell, most of them have social media feeds that get anything that comes from those sites and directs them through the news sites.
You're crazy if you think you can only get up-to-date from social media. Not mention that a lot of that first-hand information coming from social media is wrong.

Message boards have been the only social platform online that I have enjoyed. I liked Instagram for about a month until I realized it wasn't really for sharing art. Facebook was always too generic and lacking personality. I liked MySpace because you could customize your page, even though I hated when people had auto-play music on their page...lol

That's kinda what I was getting at: I look at celeb gossip as the lowest of low brow "information" coming off of social media; there's nothing of real importance there. Being informed and up to date about things of real importance (i.e. local/state/US/world news events) can be had 100% without social media.
