Official Wrestling News Thread

We finally have news on the future of Santos Escobar.

Escobar has made a number of ominous posts of late, and has effectively vanished from WWE television. His last WWE match in general was a WWE Supershow house show in Mexico, and he’s been used sparingly in the ring all year.

WWE sources confirmed to Fightful Select this morning that Santos Escobar’s contract is up “very soon,” and it hasn’t looked like he’ll be staying with the company as of now. It was implied the two sides had discussed an extension, but we’ve not confirmed as much.

Outside of WWE, Escobar performed as King Cuerno in Lucha Underground. He also wrestled extensively as El Hijo del Fantasma across CMLL, AAA, and TNA/IMPACT Wrestling. He’s expected to be in demand if he ends up leaving WWE.

Oh yeh Santos is outta here
WWE audience didn’t care for Latin Warfare that was never ending plus they butchered the Rey storyline

Damn shame

Yep

Unless there is a last second Hail Mary pass that leads to him agreeing to a new deal, Santos Escobar will depart WWE as of midnight, PWInsider.com can confirm. At that point, he will be a free agent and available to wrestle or sign anywhere he wishes.

We are told his contract expires at the end of the day and that WWE made overtures to keep Escobar (including a higher contract offer) but he turned down the offer.

Escobar, 41, broke into professional wrestling in his native Mexico. The son of El Fantasma, the second generation star originally performed as El Hijo del Fantasma. Under that persona, he held the CMLL Middleweight and World Trios titles. He later held the AAA Tag Team and Cruiserweight Championships.

For those who have asked about the whys behind Santo Escobar's planned WWE exit as of midnight, PWInsiderElite.com is told by multiple sources that it has nothing to do with money.

Sources within WWE confirm that the word making the rounds within the company is that Escobar was offered a raise as part of a new deal, but that he turned that down.

We are told that Escobar, according to sources that have spoken with him in recent weeks, made is clear that he wasn't concerned about getting a raise as much as he was with having a laid out plan to show how he would be utilized by the company going forward. We are told it wasn't even so much of a concern about getting a big push but about locking himself in when there wasn't a plan and then being in a situation where he'd be spinning his wheels instead of performing in the ring.

WWE could always come back and make a play for Escobar to remain, but as of this writing, we haven't heard from anyone they believe that to be the case as of this afternoon - and his current deal expires at midnight.

As PWInsider.com broke yesterday, Santos Escobar's WWE contract expired at midnight and he is now a free agent.

Escobar has been moved to the WWE website's alumni section.

Good for him. WWE sucks right now and he could be a good hand elsewhere.
