Official Wrestling News Thread

In a most interesting development, the word making the rounds today in Los Angeles is that former WWE Champion Drew McIntyre's WWE deal is coming to an end and the two sides haven't come to terms on a new deal yet.

Multiple sources confirmed today that McIntyre's deal is not up "imminently" but is in its final year.

Given how strongly McIntyre carried the company during the worst period of the COVID-19 pandemic, it seems almost insane that WWE hasn't already locked him up to a new deal, but we are told that two sides aren't even close to one. McIntyre signed to return to WWE in 2015, initially as part of the NXT brand following a time period where he was one of the hottest, in demand talents in the world. He headlined Wrestlemania 36, defeating Brock Lesnar, although his run as WWE Champion was obviously stunted by being part of the Thunderdome era.

Should the two sides not come to terms and McIntyre moves on elsewhere, it could be this weekend's Wrestlemania 39 bout with McIntyre vs. GUNTHER vs. Sheamus is McIntyre's last Mania appearance. One would think just about every other major promotion from AEW and New Japan on down would certainly be interested should McIntyre land on the open market.

More as we confirm.

Fightful reported that former WWE wrestler Naomi was backstage watching the Athena vs. Sakazaki match, confirmed by Athena at the post-event press conference. She is in town for a WrestleCon appearance and Thursday's WaleMania event.
Athena was asked about the report of Trinity Fatu (Naomi) being backstage, and if she'd like to have a match with her.
She said Trinity came out to support her, and would love to have a match with her cause they never had a match in WWE.

  • One reporter asked if we could see Goldberg in Ring of Honor. Khan flatly said no, saying that “Goldberg in Ring of Honor will never happen.” He explained that when he meant that bringing Goldberg in would be an "interesting idea", he meant for it to be in All Elite Wrestling. He explained that AEW and ROH have different budgets.

  • Khan closed the press conference by thanking the media and emphasizing that Wednesday’s announcement on AEW Dynamite would be a big one.

In regard to a WWE sale, we are told by sources things are "progressing." There are said to be multiple entities interested and with the company in Los Angeles this weekend, one would think there have been meetings and conversations with reps based out of the area. Those who know are keeping very quiet and guarded, but there's certainly a feeling the company is indeed heading in the direction of being sold. As I wrote this past week, this weekend could very well be the beginning of the end of the chapter that began with Vince McMahon's national expansion in the 1980s. This could be a historic Wrestlemania in that regard.

Vince McMahon, mustache and all, was backstage at the WWE Hall of Fame.

We have been told by a number of people that the Hell In A Cell presentation, entrances, etc. for Finn Balor vs. Edge will be insanely badass with homages to Edge's past, The Demon and more.

Logan Paul's entrance today is expected to feature some big special effects.

We are told here was some sort of incident in the Wrestlecon hotel bar last night that led to Melina being ejected from the facility.

We are also told that there was a fan, who was filming talents in the bar, who was arrested after he got into an incident with a number of wrestlers.

Apparently, he was interested in running in a Republican primary years ago but couldn't so him being transphobic shouldn't be a surprise
