Twenty-five years after the shocking deaths of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman gripped the nation, O.J. Simpson is living a simple, quiet life he has styled for himself in Las Vegas and would prefer not to revisit what happened on the night of June 12, 1994.
“We don’t need to go back and relive the worst day of our lives,” Simpson told Linda Deutsch of the Associated Press. “The subject of the moment is the subject I will never revisit again. My family and I have moved on to what we call the ‘no negative zone.’ We focus on the positives.”
Simpson, accused of those killings, was acquitted in the 1995 “Trial of the Century,” when a jury rendered a verdict that divided the country over racial issues, the treatment of celebrities, police conduct and domestic violence. However, Simpson, who has continued to maintain his innocence, was ordered to pay $33.5 million, much of which remains unpaid, by a civil court jury for the wrongful deaths of his ex-wife and Goldman, who was killed as he returned glasses to Brown Simpson’s house.
Simpson served time in prison after he was convicted of robbery and kidnapping for his role in a 2007 sting to retrieve memorabilia from his Hall of Fame football career. He spent nine years in a Nevada prison and was released in October 2017. Although it was believed that he would move to Florida, he has made his home in Las Vegas, where he plays golf nearly daily. “The town has been good to me,” said Simpson, who turns 72 next month. “Everybody I meet seems to be apologizing for what happened to me here.”
With permission from his parole officer, he has visited the two children he shared with Nicole. Now adults, they work in real estate in Florida. An older daughter lives with him most of the time in Vegas.
“I’ve been to Florida two or three times to see the kids and my old buddies in Miami. I even managed to play a game of golf with them,” he said, “but I live in a town I’ve learned to love. Life is fine.”
