a $100 increase in a decade is unheard of for a non rent-controlled apartment. Add to that that the owners actually live in the building and that suggests they aren't slumlord rent-gougers.
the tenants in this case were wrong as fuck and mad petty over 100 dollars and eventually they will be faced with the reality of paying real 2020 NYC rent prices to a management company that doesn't treat them with kid gloves (if they can even find a place after having an eviction in their background check).
