It was some open world stuff but there was an underlying story. Been a while since I played it but the initial story was getting to the center of the universe or some shit and all the stuff that comes along the way with making your way there. Some other stuff too but I dont remember that much. I may try to pick it back up at some point to see what changes they made.

Youd prolly like it cuz you can make bases n shit like that kinda like subnautica
