I know I’m saying they were saying there had been a rash of robberies in recent times so when they saw homie running they thought he was a robber

According to reports, the encounter between Gregory and Travis McMichael and Ahmaud Arbery may not have been the first time Gregory (in particular) and Ahmaud has crossed paths. The elder McMichael reportedly helped investigate Arbery on a past weapons charge when he was in high school.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported that Judicial Circuit District Attorney George Barnhill wrote in a letter of recusal that his son and Gregory McMichael “both helped with the previous prosecution of (Ahmaud) Arbery,” who was eventually sentenced to five-years probation. Barnhill also noted that he was aware of the connection for “three or four weeks.”

Gregory McMichael worked in local law enforcement for 30 years before retiring in May 2019. He was hired as an investigator in the Glynn County District Attorney's office in 1995. McMichael's position as an investigator for the district attorney did not afford him the power to make arrests but he worked closely with local police. Prior to working with the district attorney's office, McMichael worked as a police officer for the Glynn County Police Department.

The McMichaels were arrested on Thursday evening and charged with murder and aggravated assault.
