Do ya'll not know what a screenplay is? Do ya'll think Coogler just took an article from a Bay Area newspaper and turned it into a movie?

Also, who gives a shit if it was based on a real event? In what way does that diminish the work he did as a director?

Look man, what happened to Oscar Grant was horrifying but coogler didn't make that up

It still takes a talent to take that story and add elements to make it palatable for a movie but it's not an original story

No it's not an original story but it is an original screenplay, which is what matters for this discussion. We talking about them as directors not authors right?

What fact am I arguing against? We all know Fruitvale Station wasn't an original story. I never said otherwise. Coogler's movie was based on an original screenplay he wrote. That too is a fact. The point of contention is that I don't see how the movie being based on a real event diminishes Coogler's work in any way. Many people consider Malcolm X to be Spike's best work, that was a biopic and also based on real events. So what are we talking about here?
