OPINION Has Ryan Coogler Surpassed Spike Lee?

I like Coogler a lot, but they from two different worlds. It’s hard to compare. Coogler definitely the best since Spike.

I just wish we had so many great black directors we wouldn’t have to go back to Spike for a comparison. That’s the dream.

And yes I understand the issue is access, not talent.

Coogler literally has no movie directing work without MBJ

I can’t compare him to spike Lee until he gets more originals under his belt or has more work without MBJ to assess him as a director

Coogler found his match with MBJ just like spike with Denzel, Dicaprio and scoresese. You can't knock what Coogler has done and just saying oh he worked only with MBJ, is like saying the movie is only good cause he in it.
Gone and support them and what they doing rather it's good movies or mediocre movies.

What if the movie IS only good because MBJ is in it? You can’t even answer that

which again is why I wanna see what coogler looks like without him when comparing him to spike

Also in a thread directly comparing coogler to spike why is your stance support them regardless?

My stance is I can’t put coogler over spike right now due to him not having original movies outside of sinners (which is a good start) and because idk how good his movies would be without MBJ (due to a small sample size) I can’t really evaluate coogler yet

I thought he was just producing Him? He got a bad producer record too cause that candyman reboot was a mid pack
