Welcome To aBlackWeb

For the first time in 30 years, no hip-hop album or song has hit no. 1 in 2023.

as the article clearly states, this is largely a function of big names not dropping + a handful of non-rap songs topping the charts............if Eminem rolled out of bed last month and decided to release a weed plate worse than Revival, this thread wouldn't exist lol.

All them folks from the late 80s and early 90s that said HipHop won't last is getting their point proved and I don't like it

man come on lol. its not that deep

why are we still doing this "HIP-HOP IS GONNA GO AWAY LIKE DISCO OR GET STOLEN LIKE ROCK N ROLL" shit after 40 years?

White People stole Rock n Roll like 2 years after Chuck Berry invented it.

Disco's peak was like.......3 years??

We are coming up on the 43 year anniversary of Rapper's Delight.

Pretty much every other genre would KILL to have the sales power, talent pool, and cultural relevance of Rap/Hip-Hop lol.

We don't appreciate this because we're on the inside looking out, but lots of white people outside the culture will tell you straight up that Rock Music died because Hip-Hop took over. Straight up. White kids heard Dr. Dre & Wu-Tang and never looked back. When Kurt Cobain died, that was IT for the Grunge Rock movement. ONE death sank the entire genre. Labels searched far and wide for "the next Nirvana".....they found hot garbage like Nickelback instead. When 2pac and Biggie died, there was serious concern within the recording industry that their deaths would sink hip-hop the same way. You know what happened instead? DMX and a whole new generation of legends showed up. Because at the end of the day, its like the NBA or the NFL.............as long as Amerikkka keeps niggas in trapped in poverty and prisons, there will be a strong talent pool of gifted black people desperate to escape.

Reading this post made me think of Mos Def's track "Fear not of Man" on his album "Black on Both Sides."

Looking back I think he might've been shortsighted.

So nothing y'all said hitting
Maybe I'm just being too negative.🤷🏽‍♂️

But it ain't looking good.

I say that because I'm paying attention to world events and human behavior.
Something is different.
What was said to preserve HipHop don't hold that much weight like it use to.

So if a rap song or album ain't on the Billboard charts... It means Hip hop is dead? LOL

I thank God for the right to make personal playlists now like we did for personal mixtapes back in the day before streaming

I was reading an Article about Kanye West and 50 Cent in 2007 they were comparing Hip-Hop/Rap to
Disco
“Rapper 50 Cent has pledged to retire if Kanye West’s new album outsells his, generating much-needed publicity for a flagging musical genre that may go the way of disco.”

“Like the hyperbole of rap itself, 50 Cent’s promise was a joke. But with both superstars expected to post weaker sales than their last releases, industry insiders say hip-hop needs new artists if it is to maintain its recent dominance.”

Disco had, what a decade long stretch through the 70s and crashed in the 80s ... You can say disco and dance music are interchangeable... Beyonce the world's biggest musician released her latest album with disco/dance themes ... Disco was also the music mostly associated with gay folk

HipHop turned 50 this year... And in my opinion still going strong

Your Jiggas, NaS', Busta etc still killing it on the mic in middle age ... Cole, Kendrick will still sell irrespective

There's something for every head whether old school or the modernised new influx of drill/grime beats

HipHop far from dead in my personal opinion ... Commercialism and the radio ain't gonna kill em

Nah, I can remember the tail end of the Disco era. I was born in 1973, so I entered Kindergarten in 1978.

Disco was big from 1977-1980. In 1979 A Chicago DJ blew up some disco records before a baseball game at Kominsky Park. That was the death of Disco.

Good Times by Chic came out that summer and Rappers Delight used the Good Times beat and Hip Hop was born.

You can't compare Disco to Hip Hop. Disco was hot for 3 years, like Crunk.

I kinda cosigned what you just typed in my own post

Just differed on the number of years

Downplaying, “1st time in 30 years,” is kind of wild.

First time since 1993. Before the world knew who Biggie was. For those of you talking about a lack of heavy hitter releases I raise two points.

1.) That should really only be relevant for the album side of things. It shouldn’t take a top artist, and never has taken one, to get a #1 single. People luck into hits every year.

2.) The fact that the genre is so dependent upon a select few artists up top speaks to the health of the genre as whole.

Ultimately, there’s no issue with the genre trending back underground but these chart results definitely speak towards the cultures lack of interest in the content & quality being pushed at the mainstream level.

Yo @genocide_cutter

Quick question about underground vs mainstream

I want to know if you see the same problem as I see.

Because the times when we use to say
"The Underground is still alive" don't mean anything like it use to.......
What do you think?
