Out of fear of rejection or finding out they don't feel as strongly about you as feel for them. We're human and are social by nature it's why we have friends and family gatherings. "Not Catching feelings" is silly in the grand scheme of things as we all want to have a sense of security being around someone that makes us truly comfortable.
