In his defense I get where he's coming from with that. People tend to latch on to the characters with the worst traits and make them their own personal heroes. Even when I was a kid I thought Rorschach was the hero because I didn't get the overarching theme. The same shit happened to him with V for Vendetta. Nowadays we have The Boys which is essentially the same morality tale as Watchmen and people are still getting it wrong.

A writer like Moore probably feels personal guilt and responsibility for all these people that misinterpret his work so the last thing he wants is his shit being associated with something he had nothing to do with.
